As October approaches a dark cloud looms over the head of hockey fans nation wide; the possibility of another NHL lock out. Unlike the lockout of the 2004-2005 season (of which the season was eventually canceled), this impending lockout has the potential to be worse, having many players considering traveling and playing in European leagues while details and deals are worked out with the NHL.
The initial offer given by the league to the union contained cuts in players received hockey related revenue from 57 percent to 46 percent.
The union and the NHL has until September 15th to work out a deal, otherwise the scheduled start of the season, set to start October 11th, could be pushed back to Thanksgiving, or even as far as Christmas.
However, many players remain optimistic that the season will start on time, but are prepared to go on strike in the event that a deal is not struck.

My brother has played hockey for the past 13 years and the sport has become a major part of my family's life. I would also be sad to see the sport be in a lockout this season. I think it is silly that they cannot come to an agreement and players in major leagues, especially football, are constantly butting heads with the officials about their salary. Hopefully it all works out!
ReplyDeleteGary Bettman is the worst commissioner in all of pro sports. This is his second lockout in less than 10 years. Also last year when the NBA was locked out he could of talked to ESPN and filled in their open basketball slots which would have helped hockey become more popular in the USA.
